The Edward Gorey House celebrates the life and eccentric work of writer and artist Edward Gorey (1925-2000). Elephant House, his home on the Yarmouth Port Common on Cape Cod, has been transformed into a museum showcasing some of his original artworks, photographs, and first editions from his work as an author, illustrator, playwright, and costume and set designer.

Gorey's works include The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Wuggly Ump, The Thoughtful Alphabet, and the Amphigorey collections. His distinctive illustrations also appear in publications such as The New Yorker and The New York Times, and in books by a wide array of authors including Charles Dickens, John Updike, and Virginia Woolf. His animated credits for the PBS Mystery! series are well known to millions of television viewers. Gorey's sinister yet oddly whimsical pen and ink illustrations and his ironic, offbeat humor earned him critical acclaim and an avid following of children and adults throughout the world.

In addition to being a well-known author and artist, Gorey was also an animal lover and had a lifelong dedication to causes promoting animal care and protection. This devotion to animals and their ethical treatment is an important theme throughout the Gorey Museum's collection. With a veterinarian among their ranks, and a shared interest in the arts and animal welfare causes, the trustees of the Highland Street Foundation find tremendous appeal in supporting a museum dedicated to this intriguing genius.
